21 December 2007

It has been a month. and the sweet memories are still fresh on my mind. from the 25-28 of November, i had been enjoying myself and learning alot of vital skills besides picking up precious memories and experience which will definitely be needed in my next living years. It was the Youth Leadership Program organized by The Extol Toastmasters Club. I wasn't that keen to be there alone and so dragged de ming along to join with me. Until today i've not regretted by a single bit. =)

[first day].
after having my breakfast of roti canai and teh tarik, mom dropped me at the Wisma CNS in SS19. as usual, she just dropped me there and drove off. leaving me alone in a completely new place. I walked in and saw a sea of unfamiliar faces. the toastmasters were all busily engaged in their own conversations. through my observation, they had 2 things in common. friendly smiles. and their yellow ties! =) thank god i spotted de ming. after leaving my stuff on his table, i went to the registration counter and settled some stuff. took my file and sat beside de ming. we were busily discussing bout class party till a guy came over and talked to us. he asked whether could he sit with us as the rest looked like nerds! lol. and he's hetish menon. =) my 1st YLP friend.

[ice breaker].
we gotta write our names on the name tags and put it on. so i asked de ming to write for me and i wrote for him. =) thn we had to get to know more bout our neighbour and introduce them to the audience. hetish was my partner. he's witty and nice.

HETISH MENON.

[election].
i was nominated as the president. woot! and obviously i got the place. [cheh.] basically, it was just like a normal gavel club meeting. easy peasy. Amirah was the secretary and oops! i forgot who was the sergeant at arms. =p

[table topics].
my hobby.

[lunch].
punjabi food. fried rice. fried eggs. chicken curry. fish curry. green curry. potato curry. xD

[prepared speech].
we were given sufficient time to prepare our ice breaker speech. guess the one i did in gavel club was way better. Ee Ping was my evaluator.

"don't sway so much la, peiqi. stand still."

"okay. i'll try."

[table topics].
again. we had to randomly pick a number and present a speech based on the title given. i've chosen lucky number 4. -tell us what you're passionate in. dang. what? what? gawd. someone save me pls. i'm not passionate in anything particular. studies? sounds like a nerd. eating? crap. i was in total blankness when someone shouted sleeping. =p [my previous speeches were all related to sleeping. =.=] don't have to imagine. that speech was a total failure.

[tea].
I skipped tea. and went for add math tuition.

the 1st day was really 'life-taking' and tiring, as i only reached home at about 7 pm. after dinner it was already 9. decided that i couldn't take it anymore and hit the bed. woke up at 12 to prepare my speech for the next day. i remember i sms-ed yeong chuan to ask him for ideas. lol. but he didn't wanna help me and told me he wanted to get some sleep. =.= i finish scribbling tht piece of speech at bout 2. *panda eyes*

[2nd day].
[prepared speech].
something priceless
. my story. 2 friends. one friendship. lots applauded. =p

[listening game].
ee ping lead us in tht game. we were suppose to pass messages and it ended up so funny.

[prepared speech].
we had to prepare our speech on the spot. and i was totally blank. so i just simply take back my old speech which i've presented in Ace before. my researched speech. Valentines Day. thou i didn't prepare flowers, teddy, card, chocolates, kit kat and romantic background music like i did in ace, i believe i still did a great job. hehe [my evaluation frm dear mr azmi proves it all. =) ]

i love your handwriting. =)

[no-thx-to-azmi-session].
i'll leave this to de ming to tell u what happened.. [curi-ed this frm deming's blog. thx deming. i know u won't mind.]

It was three in the evening, we had already done many speeches by then, I sat by the table beside the stage. One of the toastmasters [azmi] stood beside me, he was to speak on voice and vocabulary. He called all of us to get closer to him and after a few minutes of the noisy shifting of chairs, we formed a semicircle around him. He then explained to us the effects and the use of intonations. After that he called Pei Qi out and sat her on a chair, Hetish was called out too. As both of them stared at each other in confusion, he instructed Hetish to confess to Pei Qi and to speak with proper intonation and variation of speech. He then said, “Hetish has had a crush on Pei Qi for the past 10 years. Ever since he saw her in kindergarten, [as i've mentioned earlier, i only get to know Hetish on the vry first day of YLP. so it's totally nt true.] he has fallen in love with Pei Qi, but has never got the opportunity to tell her how she feels. Today he is finally given this opportunity.” It was hilarious as Hetish struggled to say those words and finally the toastmaster [azmi.] called out another person. Hetish happily withdrew. The replacement was more sporting (in a way, or maybe he just likes the attention or Pei Qi!) [nope. he likes the attn. =p] and he went down on the one knee kneeling post. He stared into Pei Qi’s eyes and said to her, “Your eyes are like the moon on a starless night. Pei Qi I want to tell you something… Pei Qi, I love you!” At that moment the whole room burst with laughter and all those who were recording held their camera hand phones tighter. “I’m sorry I don’t love you,” said Pei Qi. The toastmaster [azmi]. was not satisfied and at last Pei Qi said to him, “Okay! I love you too!” [did i say tht?] (It was something like that at least). The day was made more interesting when during our Table Topic, she got a topic on the meaning of love. All in all, it was an interesting day. [and my evaluator said i spoke like a politician. =.=]

thank you de ming.

[3rd day].
i was tired as i've been staying up late to prepare two speeches for this horrible day. last day. competition. whew. pressure pressure. stress.wanna know why? blame those toastmasters who kept telling me this :

"wow. i heard tht you're a gavelier. making a speech shouldn't be a problem to you. go on. "

actually it did help to boost my self confidence. =p thx to all those toastmasters who memandang beratkan i. haha. so now, back to the topic. we were suppose to present our first prepared speech. and i was destined to be with azmi. so he was there to help us. at first i planned to make a speech to be dedicated to yeong chuan. but too bad larh, since 1) he wasnt there. 2) azmi insisted tht we MUST practice our competition speech. so i just carried on. i didn't have the mood to eat my lunch. i was so nervous and scared tht i didn't even realize someone actually stuck a banana into my hand. and until now, i couldn't recall who it was. lol. i later thn changed my white dress to my formal wear, my flat shoes to my high heels and my calm heart to shaky legs and wobbly knees. butterflies in stomach. endless rehearsals. pacing up and down the corridor. there i was, repeating my speech again and again. word by word with help from Ee Ping. thx so much! you did help me alot thru out the whole program. =) *hugs*

never take things for granted. my winning speech. XD woot~! first runner up. alex was the champion and jitesh got 2nd runner up. i know both my strong and weak points. that wasn't a speech tht could take me high up to the champion seat and bring me back a tiara. lol. but tht doesn't matter. as I've gained more thn what I've lost. my speech touched many [i hope], i realised tht i actually have quite a number of supporters [i think], and i spoke not only with my mouth and hands, but also with my own sincere heart. [tht's true]. i was really touched tht someone actually stayed back for me despite he had a meeting on. [tht was what ee ping told me.] i promise i'll watch ppl acting with you some day. =) and you still owe me ice cream. XD

my winning speech. XD

I really have learned alot thru out this 3 solid days of YLP. frm presenting a speech effectively to handling an unexpected proposal, i've learned it all frm the Youth Leadership Program conducted by the Extol Toastmasters Club. last but nvr least, azmi. don't worry i've not forgotten bout you. hmm. where should i start? ooyah, the french fries! i was totally in shock when you walked in with ONE packet of fries. [i din see 2, like what you've said]. i can still remember i was doing my ice breaker. lol. and tht evil eeping was sitting comfortably with you on the sofa. eating fries! and you didn't even stop her from eating my share. grr. nvm. thx thou. for remembering the poor girl who was eagerly waiting for your fries while doing her ice breaker. =p what else to thank you? the proposal! thx for making me realize tht i have eyes tht look like moon on a starless nite. =.= and the extra ferrero rocher. how did you know tht it was my fav? xD and tq for boosting my self confidence as well as that nice evaluation tht u gave me.
